Guest speaker: Former NHL Referee

Lance Roberts

"Game Management"

Lance talked about how the enforcement of the rules in the NHL has, after a few hiccup years, evolved over the past couple of decades and public perception of that enforcement. His talk covered subjects such as "marginal" calls, the "flow" of the game, the two-referee system, video goal judges, the increased speed of the game, and much, much more. Now, most fans recognize that it's the players that are in the wrong for breaking the rules and not the referees for enforcing the rules the players break.

Good referees earn that reputation (and respect) through fairness, honesty and superior communications skills - not to mention a good dose of "common sense".  Lance's anecdotes spiced up his presentation and made for a very enlightening evening.  Good call!
