KSA's first dinner meeting for 2014 in this, our 68th, year of helping local minor athletes, sports groups and charities was held at the Edelweiss on January 21st. We welcomed in the new year with Scott Ballantyne - and wished Scott well as his team defends its 2013 OUA championship this coming fall.
Scott has been involved with the Laurier men's baseball program for over 15 years. After 5 years as a player and 3 as an assistant coach, 2013 was his 7th year as head coach of the program. A graduate of the School of Business and Economics in 2003, Scott was a driving force in helping Golden Hawk baseball earn varsity status in 2001. As a player, he was named team MVP for 2002 and was also the recipient of the Bill Haggstom Award for the Male Contributing Most to Athletics for 2003/04. In 2007, Scott took over the helm of the Golden Hawks program and was named the OUA Baseball Coach of the Year. He is the President of the OUA Baseball Coaches Association and Chairman of the OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase that takes place each year at the Rogers Centre. Scott was also chosen to represent his country as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the World University Baseball Championships - in 2008 in the Czech Republic, and 2010 in Japan. Both years the squad finished 5th overall. Scott coached the KW Jr. Panthers of the Junior Intercounty Baseball League from 2009 - 2011, winning the JICBL Championship in 2010. In 2013, Scott was named General Manager of both the Jr. and Sr. Kitchener Panthers.)
Scott talked about the challenges his players faced overcoming the team's 4 game disciplinary suspension in 2012 and how they came together as a close-knit unit, in good part, because of it. When you're truly a bona-fide member of a team, it's not just during the games nor just when wearing the team uniform - it's a 24 hour/day obligation!

We were also pleased to welcome representatives from several of the sports groups that received KSA travel grants during the summer:
In other business, Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy boxer Tanvir Kanion presented a cheque to Anne Boehm (Children's Wish) - the proceeds from the club's fundraiser at its "Christmas Beating IX" event held December 15.
Spin 12 - Rich Donelle, co-chair of the event, presented KSA's Spin 12 Team Captain Toni Pottier with a cheque for $3,000 in support of local top-calibre athletes. The 2014 Spin 12 event is Saturday, February 8 at the Waterloo Rec. Complex. KSA is entering a team of 14 riders - each of whom is soliciting donations in support of Spin 12 for the Cardiac Care Unit at St Mary's Hospital.
