PHOTO: After Ian's presentation, there were lots of questions, discussions and photo ops. This one was squeezed in: Valerie Byer (Family & Children's Services), Ian Evans (adventurer & KSA guest speaker) and Erin (Waterloo SportsXpress) at the KSA Sept 15, 2015 dinner. A very entertaining evening!

Ian Evans - Adventurer
Ian recounted incidents about his journey to the South Pole, but he's no stranger to adventure, having scaled multiple peaks including Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Aconcagua in Argentina. Of all his adventures, Ian's trek to the South Pole was the most difficult he has endured, with two foot injuries plaguing him throughout the trip and losing 25 pounds from his already slight frame. Forty-four days and roughly 1,000 kilometres later, he and his 3 companions made it across the unforgiving Antarctic landscape - and were ready to head home!
Now he's back and living to tell the tale; long lonely 12 km daily treks, cold days and colder nights, the food - or what was called food, calorie input, weight loss and, the bright side - lots of "thinking time", comraderie, goal achievements and character development!
- Breaking the overall objective down into smaller achieveable goals is the way to achieve success. (Ian's targets for this trip ended up being one-hour segments - he just had to ski for one more hour, one hour at a time ... not 400 or whatever more kilometres.)
- Plan for success - Ian did a lot of training for this adventure including months of dry-land puliing truck tires around Elora - a local tourist attraction coming down main street!.
- Don't be overwhelmed, set your mind to do it and do it. There's a defined end in site so set up to succeed. Live with the success and relish it, not with failure.
These are just a few of thoughts Ian projected through his talk and discussion. Truly a motivational speaker - lots to think about!
