MEETING #1 OF 2007/08, SEASON #63
Monday July 9, 2007 – 6:00 PM
Edelweiss Sports Tavern, 600 Doon Village Rd., Kitchener
Socializing and networking from 6:00 – 6:30 PM
Announcement before dinner by John Thompson that an anonymous donor is paying for all the dinners for tonight’s special meeting – i.e. there is no cost to the KSA, nor any member or guest. This announcement was applauded by all those in attendance. Each attendee made his/her own introduction to the rest of the attendees.
The purpose of this special meeting is so the membership can learn the details of the “Places to Play” Campaign and act on the recommendations of the Operating Committee in a timely manner.
Dinner from 6:30 PM to 7:30PM
Following dinner, a presentation was made by the “Places to Play” Campaign. Presenters included: Ken Brooks - the Campaign Manager; Pat Doherty – Kitchener Minor Hockey, and Rick Cadilha - Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy.

The presenters up-dated KSA members on the need for a new facility for both hockey and boxing and the features of the new facility. The campaign objective is to cover the additional $2,000,000 needed to cover the specific needs of KMHA, WRBA (e.g. offices, storage, etc.) and a four-lane walking track. Sponsorship opportunities were presented with the focus for KSA being a lead sponsor for the “lobby”. For a $100,000 donation, KSA would be recognized by having the lobby designated as the “KSA Lobby” and KSA would have a prominent presence therein including a wall for displays, “Pacesetter” recognition, media exposure, etc.
A question/answer period was held. Members were then lead through the discussions and motions from the Operating Committee meeting of June 19th. Major points discussed included:
(i) the impact that a significant donation to “Places to Play” Campaign will have on KSA's ability to provide funding to its annual commitments. A major concern was that the KSA continue to be able to function as it has in the past, i.e. as a financial resource for local minor athletes and sports groups.
(ii) the term of fulfilling the pledge - i.e. confirmation that more than five years can be used to fulfill the pledge (even though the intent is to pay it off earlier). Seven years is acceptable.
(iii) the potential initial costs of having a KSA wall installed to adequately celebrate the history and legacy of KSA and subsequent updating costs to keep the history current. This is not part of the pledge and will be dealt with at a future date(s).
(iv) “Places to Play” to provide the initial "recognition signage" for the lobby.
On the side of caution then, the recommendation is to proceed with the pledge with payment obligations stretched over a longer period than, hopefully, necessary. The proposed extended terms being discussed have already been noted to be acceptable by the campaign committee. The only concern regarding the KSA display(s) in the lobby, at this stage, is for appropriate “KSA recognition” signage to be provided for the lobby.
Moved by John Weber and seconded by George McNeil that KSA make an initial donation of $30,000 (for KSA fiscal year 2006-07) and $10,000 annually for the years 2007-08 to 2013 -14 (to total $100,000), with all payments to be made equally to the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association and the Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy and with an internal objective and initiative to fulfill paying the total pledge early. CARRIED unanimously (Bob McKillop declared a conflict and did not vote)
John Thompson noted that the cheques, KMHA $15,000 & WRBA $15,000, will be issued immediately.
The meeting was adjourned and the Operating Committee reconvened.
