KSA Scholarship Program

Background

In 1996 funding was provided for an initial five-year Scholarship Program for graduating students of secondary schools in Kitchener-Waterloo.  The intent was to provide four awards of $1,000 each year.  In 2001, funding was confirmed to continue the program.

By 2005, after ten successful years, the program has provided financial awards to 52 students, and funding in total has surpassed $58,000.  The award was also increased to provide each winner with an additional $1,000 upon entry into his/her second year of studies.

For the first 10 years of  the program, the Programmed  Insurance Brokers Golf Tournament  annually provided a
supporting sponsorship.

Additional sponsors include:

Cober Printing - "In-kind" donation for printing

City of Kitchener Department of Community Services - referrals to the minor sports groups.

The KW Record - "In-kind" donation - recognition ad.

Elgibility and Selection

Candidates must be residents of the City of Kitchener and be currently attending secondary school. (Scholarships are intended for students in their graduating year but consideration is also given to those who have undertaken an "extra" year of high-school education.)

The Scholarship Selection Committee of Kitchener Sports Association will review all applicants. Recipients will be selected and each will receive a $1,000 financial award for their first year of post-secondary education, with another $,1000 for the second consecutive year of post-secondary study.  Payment is contingent upon proof of registration, each year, in a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

In addition, a successful candidate has to complete the application process and:

  • Display a commitment to academics during his/her school career and be furthering his/her education at a recognized post secondary institution in the immediate autumn term (or first available term).
  • Display a commitment to minor sport(s) (use "link" for list.  Please note: This list is not definitive for scholarship  purposes as involvement with other sports groups may be considered for reasons such as; local affiliation is not existant for that sport or your particular skill level,  or  your group is not yet affiliated. ) Note: In 2009 a fifth potential scholarship was added with the "sports" qualification being a member of the KW Ranger Hockey Team.
  • Display a demonstrated financial need.
